Characteristics and Selection of Water-Based Adhesives

Water-based adhesives are primarily made from high-molecular-weight polymers, water-soluble resins, and water as a diluent. They are odorless, environmentally friendly, and non-toxic. In recent years, water-based adhesives have seen rapid development due to the increasing environmental awareness of people.

一. Characteristics of Water-Based Adhesives:

1. Applicability to Substrates: Not all adhesives are universal, and each adhesive is suitable for bonding specific materials or material types. Currently, water-based adhesives are mainly used for bonding between substrates such as coated paper/paper, PET/paper, BOPP/paper, PVC/paper, and plastic/plastic.

2. Key Characteristics: The characteristics of water-based adhesives primarily include appearance (product appearance and adhesive film appearance), solid content, density, pH value, solvent ratio, open time, high/low-temperature resistance, initial viscosity, and curing viscosity, among others. The bonding method for water-based adhesives is generally divided into machine application, manual application, and a combination of both, each requiring different characteristics. For example, when using machine application, a short open time for the adhesive is usually required, while manual application may demand a longer open time. When bonding on film surfaces, the adhesive should have flexibility and high curing viscosity. Regarding high/low-temperature resistance, water-based adhesives are expected to maintain their bond strength after baking at 60°C for 72 hours and subsequent freezing at -10°C for 72 hours, without any debonding or film brittleness.

3.Advantages and Disadvantages: The advantages of water-based adhesives include their stable viscosity, environmental friendliness, non-flammability, and ease of cleaning. However, they have certain drawbacks, such as potential pollution due to the use of emulsifiers, stabilizers, pH adjusters, and anti-freezing agents. Water-based adhesives also tend to have slow evaporation, lower initial viscosity, higher prices, poor wetting properties on plastic films, and a tendency to corrode equipment.

二.Selection of Water-Based Adhesives:

1. Application Criteria: Different types of water-based adhesives have varying formulation methods and production processes, resulting in differences in their chemical and physical properties. These differences are reflected in their application criteria. In general, the most important application criteria for water-based adhesives in the packaging and printing industry include bonding strength, high/low-temperature resistance, moisture resistance, and tackiness. Common defects that occur in actual applications, such as poor bonding, debonding, and brittle adhesive film, are primarily caused by the failure to meet these four application criteria.

2. Cost-Effectiveness: When selecting water-based adhesives, it's essential to first understand the characteristics of the processed products. Choose adhesives that offer the best cost-effectiveness, as this is the rational way to make a purchase decision.
